Fiber Optic Safety Reminders

  • Never look into the end of a fiber cable — invisible laser light can cause permanent eye damage
  • Wear fiber optic safety glasses when splicing or handling bare fiber
  • Dispose of all fiber scraps in a designated sharps container — do not leave on surfaces
  • Use a visual fault locator (VFL) only with proper eye protection
  • Keep work area clean and well-lit during splicing operations
  • Wash hands thoroughly after handling fiber — glass fragments can embed in skin

RF Exposure Safety

  • Maintain safe distances from active RF transmitters per FCC OET Bulletin 65
  • Use RF personal monitors when working near active antenna systems
  • Verify RF lockout / reduced power before climbing active tower sections
  • Follow site-specific RF safety plans and posted signage at all times
